Canton Fair Buyer’s Guide: Planning, Visiting and Following Up
How to get value from the Canton Fair in Guangzhou: phases and timing, registration, planning your days, what to ask at stands, and following up with suppliers.

About this guide. This is general information based on our work as a sourcing agent in Guangzhou, not legal, tax or customs advice. Requirements depend on the product and destination and change over time; confirm them with the relevant authority, your customs broker or a qualified adviser before ordering.
The China Import and Export Fair, known as the Canton Fair, is held twice a year in Guangzhou, in spring and autumn, at the Pazhou complex. It is the largest general trade fair in China and, for many buyers, the most efficient way to meet a large number of manufacturers in a few days. It is also large enough to waste a trip if you arrive without a plan.
How the fair is organised
Each session runs in phases, each lasting several days, and each phase groups related product categories. Electronics, machinery, vehicles, lighting and building materials are typically in one phase; consumer goods, gifts and home décor in another; textiles, garments, shoes, food and health products in a third. Check the current session’s phase schedule before booking travel so you are in Guangzhou during the phase that covers your products.
Before you go
- Register as a buyer through the official fair channels and obtain your badge in advance where possible.
- Visa and travel. Confirm entry requirements for your nationality well ahead of time.
- Accommodation. Hotels near Pazhou fill early; the metro serves the complex if you stay further out.
- Shortlist exhibitors. The exhibitor list is searchable. Build a target list by hall and stand number, and group by phase and day.
- Prepare your brief. Bring product specifications, target quantities, target markets and any compliance requirements written down. Suppliers respond better to a specific brief than to “what can you make?”
At the fair
- Work hall by hall. Distances are long; do not plan to bounce between phases or distant halls in one day.
- At each stand of interest, ask whether they are the manufacturer, where the factory is, what they export and to whom, minimum quantities and lead times. Photograph the stand, the products and the business card together so your notes stay connected.
- Collect samples or arrange to have them sent; note the sample terms.
- Keep a simple scoring sheet so that a hundred conversations are comparable afterwards.
- Take a break away from the halls; decision quality falls sharply after several hours on the floor.
If you are visiting for a specific sector, our product categories pages show what we check for each.
What the fair does not tell you
A good stand shows what a company sells, not necessarily what it makes or how well. Trading companies exhibit alongside factories. Samples on a stand are the best units available, not a production batch. Use the fair to build the long list and start relationships; verification still happens afterwards, following the steps in our supplier verification checklist.
Factory visits around the fair
Guangzhou sits in the middle of the Pearl River Delta manufacturing region. Many exhibitors’ factories are within a few hours’ drive, in Guangdong cities such as Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Shenzhen and Huizhou. Building one or two factory visits into the trip, before or after the fair days, is often the most valuable part of the journey. Arrange them in advance; factories need notice, and a local contact who can drive, translate and keep the day on schedule makes the difference between a visit and a tour.
After the fair
- Within a week, follow up with a written brief to the shortlisted suppliers; interest fades quickly on both sides.
- Request quotations on a consistent specification and Incoterm so they can be compared.
- Run verification on the top candidates.
- Order paid samples made to your specification.
- Only then discuss a trial order.
How Flawless Effect helps
We are based at Pazhou Digital Science and Technology Industrial Park, next to the fair complex. For visiting buyers we coordinate fair days, factory visits and on-site negotiations with local guidance and interpretation, and provide meeting space in Guangzhou to review samples and meet suppliers away from the halls. If you cannot travel, we can attend on your brief and report back. See on-site support and virtual sourcing.
